ONE THING NO ONE CAN EVER HAVE

You may be the president of the greatest country on earth or the most
vicious rebel leader championing the cause of all deities there are
put together.

You may be the most beautiful/handsome persona alive or the ugliest
being ever beheld by the sun or moon (depending on when you prefer to
make your appearance).

You can be the most humanitarian philanthropist or the most
misanthropic task master that ever lived.

You may live in the most serene and prosperous land on earth or be a
squatter in the myriad slums that shame the opulence of those who
steal more than their fair share from national coffers.

Your abode may be the most palatial of homes, rigged with gold and
diamond or it could be the most "squalocious" rigged with mines by
people who you know nothing about.

You may be the custodian of the most exotic and exquisite throng of
males or females or both, or you could be the one hermit who nobody
knows; the type that even John the baptist will have pity upon.

You may be a member of the exclusive Forbes 10. 50 or 100 or
dismembered figuratively by the depth and size of your deprivation.

You may be the most religious of humans, the one greater than Elijah,
who can call tsunami instead of mere fire from the sky or you may be
the sham mystique who hoodwinks hard-working peoples in order to
deprive them of their kobos, pennies and cents.

You may think you own all your heart desires or that even the tattered
clothes that pretend to cover your nakedness do not even belong to
you.

You believe that happiness has a permanent residence in you or that
everything about you is mired in bitterness, sadness and depression.

Whatever it is you think you have, there are people who have much more
than you do and there are others who have nothing at all.

In spite of what we have got or think we have got.

In spite of our pretences, subterfuge, white lies and hot air.

In spite of our pretentious religiosity, feigned and assumed morality
as well as ridiculous grandstanding against those who are obviously
better but are ordinarily more discreet than we are, there is one
thing we can never have! That thing no one can ever have is
EVERYTHING!

Learning Deutsch

The first time we arrived purposely to learn German, we were so enthusiastic. For me, I haven't really sat down to learn a new language, perhaps because there are no formalised institutions for learning Nigerian languages as in Germany. And that strikes me as odd! No one seems to have discovered that we could actually create formalised outlets for learning some, if not all, of our 250 languages. If that had existed, I could have spent time learning good Hausa formally in the six years that I spent teaching in Gombe.  But again, there is yet another snag: why would one pay, sometimes heavily, to learn a language that perhaps has little or no global presence? People have been learning German, French, Spanish and Portuguese, and they are now learning Chinese even in Europe. Why?
