Does Karma Really Exist?
I have been away from here for a long while due to a very tight schedule. Work has not yet reduced for me, but something deserving of mention here came up and I could not resist the temptation to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard as the case may be).
I have a class that I've been with for a couple of years now. It is a peculiar class. I am not in the habit of writing about my students but they are a special case.
In their first semester here, I was not around. I was away for three months. When I returned, they have already created a furore which led to the sack of a colleague of mine. By the end of their first year, they have created an unenviable record for themselves as the class with the highest rate off gossip, character assassination and the lowest of grades. It is a class where only one student is a four-pointer (according to their lore: because her husband bribes lecturers to give her good grades); no other above 3.5 CGPA; about three or four dilly-dallying above three points; and the rest making do with their one and two points.
It was with their set that I noticed that results are removed from the notice board, especially theirs. In fact, the first time it was done, the lock of the notice board was broken. I had to threaten them that the next time it happens, I will ensure their class result is never posted before that era passed (I suppose). Removal of results is their own panacea for very poor results. There seems to be no willingness to up their ante and put more effort into their studies. All they do is to sit don and trade tales about how one student or the other is using sexual favours (if she is young and single) or bribes (if she is married) to pass their courses.
At one time, there were rumours that they possess a video of one of the lecturers having sex with one of the students. The origin of the tale is that a student (married woman) sneaked into the lecturers office and planted a video camera which captured the said video. The fact that that video has not been seen till date, puts a question mark on the veracity of its existence. Yet, when the news broke it was as if the said lecturer was going to lose his job. But this guy clearly maintained his innocence and stated explicitly that he has no relations with the said student.
This class spared no one. Even the female teachers, some of who endorse their oral profligacy, are not spared. One of them is presented as being unintelligent and not qualified to teach; another is too proud; yet another stole somebody's husband; and tales like that.
The most annoying aspect of the tale of this class is that one always has to pretend that s/he does not hear these things. You enter their class and you have to swallow the anger you have for them in order to teach. And while you are at it, instead of listening, they take their time to count the number of times your eyes move to one person or another in order to determine whether there is a relationship or another. They are wont to remember the number of times you related directly with a particular student in a semester and will definitely not remember the last time you taught in class.
I remember a particular member of the class who failed my course. In that semester, she failed three others. But as usual, it was my course that was her major problem. Eventually, the following semester, she failed one course again (mine). And by the statutes of the school she must step down to repeat the courses she failed. But somehow, by the time results were being computed, one of the carry overs deftly disappeared. Up till this moment, none of us can say for sure how that magic happened. But thank goodness for their tongue, because it was from them that we realised that this woman has cheated the system. So she was caught and is presently facing severe sanctions >>>
Another development, a guy in the class now has a world class porn video which I hear is on YouTube. He recorded himself having sex with his girlfriend and somehow the video leaked and found itself all over the internet and the university. They are presently undergoing disciplinary action.
I woke up this morning and decided to share this with you not to villify this class or vindicate myself but to emphasise that karma happens. How is it that it is the same people who have an inexistent video about their teacher that now have a world-class porn video? And what is it with a lady who paints everyone as black now coming down at the mercy of those she maligned? Good students are known by their good results not by their monotonous mantra that states how good they are! So before you open your mouth to share stories about people, think of facts and proofs first. And even if you prove them to be true, why must it be you that should spread them?
