YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE!

It peeves me a lot;
You are struggling to make ends meet
And the ends are bent on never having a common ground
Then you are out, relaxing with friends
Or at home with your family
And one idiot with the privilege of a gun
Jumps in and shouts: Your money or your life!

A girl is born in a loving environment
Nurtured into an adorable princess
Treated with respect, dignity and charity
And then one day, a homo sapien with the privilege of a phallus
Jumps into her life
Masquerading like a knight in shining armour
Whereas he's just as common as the one, shouting:
Your money or your life!

You are born in a crazy land called 9ja
You have high hopes of becoming successful
Everyone is convinced that your talents will elevate you
But then reality begins to set in:
One privileged glutton prefers to use the position you deserve to
favour his girlfriend's uncle's brother
And as if that isn't enough,
Politicians decide to steal everything that matters
Just like the thief shouting: Your money or your life!

Whose money?
Whose life?

Even the ones who claim as yours
Behind the privileges of guns, positions and status
Will never go to the grave with you

Learning Deutsch

The first time we arrived purposely to learn German, we were so enthusiastic. For me, I haven't really sat down to learn a new language, perhaps because there are no formalised institutions for learning Nigerian languages as in Germany. And that strikes me as odd! No one seems to have discovered that we could actually create formalised outlets for learning some, if not all, of our 250 languages. If that had existed, I could have spent time learning good Hausa formally in the six years that I spent teaching in Gombe.  But again, there is yet another snag: why would one pay, sometimes heavily, to learn a language that perhaps has little or no global presence? People have been learning German, French, Spanish and Portuguese, and they are now learning Chinese even in Europe. Why?
