My Japan Memoirs

My heart goes out to the Japanese in this period of tribulation. Being buffeted by an earthquake and a tsunami at the same time is a plague that no other nation has ever experienced in known history. Studying about how your island-nation is very prone to earthquakes and earth tremors, I  become, at once, aware and convinced that you need a new place to call home. And I decided to take a look around the world for a new homeland for you.

China is the closest to you, but within it the democratic freedom that you have enjoyed in your homeland will become history. State suppression and commodification of the masses (into cheap labour) might de-personalise you and turn your people into beasts of burden especially considering that the Chinese might want to avenge your colonisation of their state a century ago.

India is where you might have moved to next, but I remember that the gross poverty in the midst of plenty will not spare you. The slum your arrival will create will further turn the nation into a clutter of slums.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq might be attractive, but there is no doubt that you will become bomb-testing fodder for religious zealots who have been rehearsing with the lives of their own people since America and her people are so far away from them.

Russia will definitely not forget their contest with you over a group of islands that both of you claim and thus will most likely push you to Siberia where I am sure you will neither find comfort nor solace.

The Middle East will definitely require that you either align with the Arabs or the Jews. Joining the Jews means you will be exterminated by the determination of the other. The reverse will turn you into another West Bank, Gaza or Golan Heights added to the accompanying deprivations and regulation of freedom.

North Africa, on your crossing the Suez will be a different experience altogether because you will be caught in between the crossfires of the forces of revolution and the pro-government paid hands that are pummelling the people into submission with heavy artillery.

Of course, the stench of poverty, bigotry, ethnic and religious intolerance and strife, as well as, the de-forested heat of the Sahara will make sure you don't get through to sub-Saharan Africa let alone getting to South Africa.

The Mediterranean will give you easy access to Europe, but the people of Italian Lampedusa may have become much more hostile as you arrive. Getting into mainland Europe, your coming might be heralded by a Greece-like failure for the EU.

The United Kingdom will not be lenient to you. Harsh economy, rising taxes, high school fees, increased VAT as well as the threats of terrorism will make you wish you were back in your earthquake-ridden land.

Crossing the Atlantic will confirm you as easy targets for terrorists and then you can face racism, unemployment and could be exposed to economic-quakes of gargantuan proportions perhaps with the long expected collapse of the "wall" in Wall Street.

Don't even think of going south because you will simply be in the crosshairs of government army and drug gangs that run from Mexico to the north of Latin America.

Where then can you go? The whole world is undergoing crises in myriad forms. Going to my land, I will not advise because rather than tolerate our differences we arrogate them in threatening proportions. So your coming will escalate the already riotous segregation that is gradually decimating the population alongside hunger, police brutality, impunity and governmental lack of vision and focus. Ours is not a country of natural disasters like yours, but that of natural blessing and splendour. However due to the greed, selfishness and visionlessness of those who claim to be our leaders we have turned it into a state of human disasters and degenerate squalour.

Take heart, Japan! May your hearts be strengthened by the knowledge that life is not fair. Those who are blessed with natural splendour, willingly romance with human-made disasters. And those who will do anything to minimise human-made disasters are fraught with natural disasters.

I can now wake up, it is day time! Smile if you survived the darkness and brace yourself for another. Not only in Japan, but everywhere because there seems to be no end to the disasters that now plague humanity!
